Decision details

Acceptance of Demolition tender for Former Saddleworth High School, High Street, Uppermill

Decision Maker: Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Reform and Regeneration, Executive Director for Place & Economic Growth

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

The purpose of this report is to seek approval to accept the successful tender and award and enter into a contract for the demolition of the former Saddleworth School, High Street, Uppermill to D.Hughes Demolition

Decision:

RESOLVED - That: the Council seek to appoint D Hughes Demolition

Reasons for the decision:

Option 1 - appoint D. Hughes Demolition

Alternative options considered:

Option 2 - do not proceed with a contract award. The Council could choose to do nothing and not appoint a demolition contractor at this time. In proceeding with this option, the Authority would
be unable to commence any demolition works and therefore, would become responsible for the significant holding costs associated with the property
Option 3 – Do nothing and commence marketing. An alternative instead of demolishing the property would be for the Council to look to sell the site in its existing condition. There are a range of issues with this approach insofar that, it could take a significant period in which to attract and conclude a sale meaning that, the Council would be left maintaining the site and incurring the holding costs in the interim. As the property is in a dilapidated condition, there is thought to be no merit in proceeding with this option.
